Once again I am writing to express my displeasure with the McGuinty Liberal’s lack of compassion for the victims who are suffering from wind turbine adverse health effects.

I refer to the letter, attached below, addressed to Premier McGuinty composed by yet another Ontarian suffering from wind turbine exposure.

How many families will have to suffer before the McGunity Liberals and their business partners, the wind energy companies, take notice?

The families of the Ripley Wind Project have endured adverse health effects for more than a year.

Everyday more and more Ontarians are becoming aware of the McGuinty Government’s policy of placing wind turbines ahead of public health.

I demand to know what the McGuinty Liberals are going to do to stop the suffering.  I await your prompt response to my demand.

Letter from a wind turbine complex victim

Mr. McGuinty,

This is my third letter to you, our government’s top representative, regarding the serious health problems incurred and occurring to the residence within the Ripley Wind Project since the last week of November 2007.

In the first letter dated July4, 2008 I informed you, my government, of variables which have changed for the families effected as well as potential solutions. The two that have caused us harm are:

1)     Our Hydro One neutral line was removed and replaced by the grounding system for the E-82 variable speed industrial turbines. Our neutrals were bonded to this system.

2)     The enormous blades of the industrial turbine began rotating above the height of our homes and near our homes.

Due to these changes we experienced and still experience severe health problems, some of which are:  sleep disturbances, sleep deprivation, the sensation of you skin crawling or being bit, humming in the head by the ears, ringing in the ears, headaches, heart palpations, digestive problems, nose bleeds and increasing severity of not feeling well.

Mr McGuinty while reading this correspondence imagine your family’s normal healthy home environment changing to start causing the above problems and trying to reach out to the companies and government to solve the problems. You envision in the 21st century you could obtain help for your health, trust me it will not be there.

The companies were asked for health protocol since the spring of 2007 (none provided yet) and were asked that their PR rep due a community health survey to ensure the health of all Ripley neighbors were considered, too, (none was done).

After 5 months of severe symptoms we begged for sleep and were billeted in town paid for by the windmill company. Our homes were totally disconnected from and isolated from Hydro One and put on standalone generators for months. We were very ill from the effects of the unfiltered power (electrical pollution) and the blade sound and vibrations coming into our homes, but, some improvement was noted. Two small sections of high voltage lines were buried passed our homes, which helped to some extent. Our homes are still not the healthy environments we experienced for some 19 to 36 years prior to Nov. 2007. Your home Mr. Guinty is it still healthy? Each of the above facts, I have informed your office by phone.

July 14, 2008 A response to the first letter was received indicating concern. Also, Min. John Gerretson would reply. Nothing!

August 13, 2008 Cheryl from your office said to fax the Premier if no follow-up occurred.

August 14, 2008 I sent two letters. In one I lodged the following, “ I am lodging a formal or official complaint regarding the health and safety of my family and all the families within the Ripley and any other wind project of any size in Ontario. “

August 20, 2008 You (our top level of government) replied and thanked me for my letter regarding our personal situation. My concerns were important to you and the. Min. of the Environment was supposed to have sent a response Sept. 19, 2008, but, according to, John, your communication person “my secretaries must have lost it”. John was to send me a copy as of Dec. 23, 2008. The response is still not here and we are still being harmed.

So the overall goal of the green energy act is important, but, to ignore and exclude health of the population living within the set up and running of projects is down right silly. When does an elected body ignore the voices of the people who are having their health severely affected?  This is an example when good government bodies are suppose to come to the rescue of the voter being harmed.

Now, mistakes in judgment have been made in the Ripley Wind Project that should be immediately and fully corrected AND NOT REPEATED anywhere across the province for the sake of an act which will override the honest concerns of voters and municipalities regarding harm to anyone’s health.

Signed,  Mrs. S. [name available on request] and Neighbours

  1. It makes me sick to read about this suffering. I’ve called my MPP and am waiting for a response. Also, I have e-mailed the Premier with the following note and the above letter.

You can do the same by following this link:

    Honourable Dalton McGuinty,

The placement of windmills in this province is causing ill-effects on people. Your Minister of Energy has stated that few are getting sick because of them. Not all windmills are placed in close proximity to people’s homes, and some people are just not effected. That is not a good reason not to address the issue.

The following letter recently sent to you by a Ripley resident and her neighbours shows the suffering they are enduring. I am adding my name to it in protest of your government’s plan to place windmills too close to our homes. I ask that in your new green energy act that you provide for a minimum 500m setback from roads and property lines and 1.5-2.0km from homes. Hydro One has a 500m setback from high capacity transmission lines; we should have at least as much. The setback at Ripley is 700m and is totally inadequate.

  2. I think it is about time that this was dealt with in a fair and sane way. It is time to listen and not turn away from something that is real and ruining the lives of many. Please do what you know is the right thing to do!

  3. . I’m writing on behalf of my parents and our neighbours who have been suffering since November 2007 of the effects of the Ripley Windturbine Project! Our neighbour has written this letter sharing the common concerns my parents and neighbours have. They need all of our support in fighting against this, and the new green energy bill that there will be no questions asked when it comes to Windturbines, and they can put them up wherever they want!

Many of you are aware of the problems that my parents, as well as myself have had by being in that environment. My last weekend home in January, I was only there for two nights and had headaches, earaches and a pressure in my head, none of which I suffer from outside of being at my parents. This is a regular occurrence when I go home now, I can’t even imagine being my parents and having to live in that environment. As many of you know, I like to spend a good chunk of time during the summer at my parents in the peaceful country by the pool. Well that peaceful environment is no more, on windy days it sounds like I’m sitting on the tarmac of an airport that being the least of my concerns when dealing with headaches, earaches, and a pressure in my head. Or how disruptful it was to myself and parents daily life/routine, last summer most nights were spent in a hotel with my mom because she couldn’t handle the inability to sleep and ringing in her ears, as well as other ongoing symptoms, which was paid for by one of the companies involved. Our nightly routine was to pack up and head into Kincardine around 8pm to a hotel to sleep for the night and return home at 8 am to try and live a regular life. How insane is this? A family that has lived in their home for 30 plus years now can’t even stand to sleep in their own home, and at times be in their own homes because of how horribly they feel due to all of these side-effects. How can our government continue to disregard these health concerns. These people aren’t ‘crazy’ though many try to label them that way, and say they are making this all up! I’ve lived it, nowhere near the extent my parents and neighbours do on a daily basis, with no idea of how this may actually be hurting their health in the long term, or my own for even going to visit my family and the home I grew up in for most of my life.

Please just take the time to read this article written by our neighbour and friend, and just think how you would feel if your family was in this situation. Your support would be appreciated. In the response beneath this letter there is a direct link to McGuinty’s website that you could leave him a personal message. I know my parents, neighbours and I appreciate all of your support in this matter.

To just clarify, we are for green energy, but not when it effects peoples health and safety in their own homes.

    Mrs. S’ Neighbour and Supporter

  4. You’ve confirmed your worst fears–the effects are reversible. Under the act the onus is on us to prove that the health and safety effects are irreversible.

Section 142.1 (3) states: “A person mentioned in subsection (1) may require a hearing under subsection (2) only on the grounds that engaging in the renewable energy project in accordance with the renewable energy approval will cause serious and irreversible harm to plant life, animal life, human health or safety or the natural environment.”

Marion Fraser and other members of the Green Energy Act Alliance are going around the province promoting this act, and they praised the government for introducing it.

McGuinty and Smitherman write off opposition as NIMBYism.

“Health and safety come first unless it interferes with green energy production” is their new policy.

Definitely e-mail them and send them a hard copy too. If you have time, send it to every MPP. Some like to forward them to the appropriate minister. It works wonders.

  5. Earning large quantities of money and entitlements at the expense of human suffering is not very liberal, is it?
