McGuinty Liberals Silence the People to Protect the Wind Lobbyists!

From Ontario Legislature Hansard Transcripts  April 8, 2009

MPP Ms. Sylvia Jones: A constituent in my riding of Dufferin-Caledon has been denied the opportunity to speak before the standing committee for Bill 150, the Green Energy Act.

Barbara Ashbee is a resident of Amaranth and is today living with the side effects of having wind turbines surround her home. In fact, the closest turbine is measured just 450 metres from her house. Yet my constituent has been refused an opportunity to share her experiences during public hearings on Bill 150.

This is just what I was afraid was going to happen. I’ve spoken to this in this chamber on numerous occasions to voice my concerns and those of my constituents about the Green Energy Act. This act removes all oversight from municipalities. Now this government is not even going to listen to the concerns of someone who has first-hand experience. It’s important to the legislative process that people like Barbara Ashbee, who live every day with the side effects of wind turbines, be allowed to speak and share their experiences.

Myself and members of the Progressive Conservative Party have been calling for public input from interest groups and communities that have wind farms. I had hoped that we could all work together to create legislation that meets the needs of communities across our province. It looks as though the government is once again leaving out the most important interest group when proposing new legislation: the people.

  1. McGuinty and Smitherman “think” that by not “recognizing” that real people are having real health problems with their headlong approach to populate all of Rural Ontario with huge 400 foot monsters nobody will notice what destruction is being caused. Unfortunately for them there are over 1/2 Million taxpayers/voters that have already requested a Moratorium on any further Wind Development! When election time comes what will these two “politicians” have to say to them?…Goodbye McGuinty……….Goodbye Smitherman……”it hasn’t been nice ta know ya”

  2. Good point, this thing is going to be a make or break for this government. The conservatives could make a lot of lost ground on the fact that the GEA is flawed policy. IF enough protest is raised, it appears that this is going to be a smitherman swan song so this could potentially lead to an election

  3. When Barbara was to speak at Essex on how terrible the noise is by a wind farm Mr. Howe from HGC testing and Canadian Hydro Developers connived to keep her home. Then Leventhal and Howe preceded to state that some people will need help from psychologists to learn how to deal with the noise. Is this not a health risk ? Whose going to pay for these doctors ?Any other council in Ontario would have said NO TURBINES until we can be assured our resident will not be put at risk. Not the know -it-all bullies on Essex council .McGuinty’s bullies don’t want to hear the truth either
