Dalton unplugged on electricity: Editorial

McGuinty and Duncan laugh as they tell Ontario families their hydro bills will be going up 46%

Toronto Sun Editorial

The government can brag all they like about closing coal plants — power only used in rare times when supplies ran short, but that didn’t change much for Ontario.  Dalton McGuinty’s new Green Energy Act has signed us up for outrageously expensive wind and solar energy — an impact felt directly on your electricity bill.

Those clever Liberal spinners have struck again.

We bet you believed those news stories about how the government was giving you a 10% monthly cut in your electricity bill. You may have even exhaled slightly.

Bad idea.

Finance Minister Dwight Duncan released figures Thursday showing over the next five years you’ll be paying a whopping 46% more for hydro.

Zap!

And don’t forget the 8% HST hit we took back on Canada Day.

So, go ahead and deduct your piddly 10% rebate — you’ll still be weeping in your electricity bill.

Why is this happening? Yes, there’s a massive overhaul needed for our neglected power grid and nuclear plants.

But Ontario’s government has also bungled the electricity file.

Add on the dumb Smart Meters and Time-of-Use pricing that’s doing no one any favours, and it’s clear we’ll be paying for this green stupidity for generations.

It’s not easy being green. Or cheap, either. But don’t worry, your leaders have a plan. We’re heading into an election year. So the Liberals will be using their 10% “Ontario Clean Energy Benefit” to sloganeer on your electricity bill.

Still, it’s like trying to heal heart surgery with a Band-Aid. What an insult.

That’s especially true when you calculate the energy handout will slap an extra $1 billion on the province’s maxed out credit cards.

The province’s treasurer feels everything will be fine, though, because the deficit is actually only $18.7 billion, not the $19.7 billion previously projected.

Oh happy days.

A better plan would have seen handing Ontarians what the NDP recommended, a break on the HST on electricity bills. Especially if the change was permanent.

An even better plan would be to blow off some of the green power initiatives.

Stop tilting at windmills, premier.

Plug in to sanity for a change.

  1. Nothing green about wind turbines! The more turbines…the more burning of fossil fuels. Birds being sacrificed, wildlife flee rural countryside and people forced to abandon their homes. All so McGuinty can appear GREEN to the uninformed masses who have voting power. Lets get rid of this dictator! Run these parasitic wind developers out of Canada! Every Municipality in Ontario should begin and end their day with massive protesters on their steps! Infrasound makes people sick. Turbines have no place in rural residential areas… period!

  2. it is time for every one to join together as a single group of citizens instead 50-60 seperate ones.united we stand divided we fall.the Gov.and developers have kept us fighting all these little fires all over the Province, instead of joining together and take on one major battle at a time UNITED AS ONE

  3. I wonder exactly how many pieces of silver it took for Dalton to sell his soul to the wind energy devils?

The unfortunate thing is that Dalton’s actions are dragging all of us down with him.

We have to keep doing everything we can to educate and inform all residents of Ontario of how “non-green” the entire wind energy scam is.

In reality the wind energy scam is only a reincarnation of a ponzi scheme–but lots of us have figured out the error of Dalton’s ways.

  4. “Dalton unplugged on electricity”

Dalton is unplugged, unhinged, un-impressive, unscrupulous, unnerving, uninspiring,
un-useful, unnecessary, unwanted and needs to be un-elected!

(if anyone has anymore “un” words –have at ‘er!)

We need to start a public countdown clock to Dalton’s demise!

    B.B.W.

  5. McGuinty thinks that his green energy program will make Ontario a leader in green energy. Corporations from China are jumping at the chance to take advantage of the over generous hydro rates that Dalton has promised them. Thanks to Dalton we will be sending more of our hard earned money to China. I can also see many large manufacterers looking to relocate to other provinces or states who have more reasonable hydro rates. Thanks again Dalton, your drive to make Ontario green will drive employers away, and destroy what is left of the middle class in this province.

At moments like this you really have to turn to Shkespeare…

A knave; a rascal; an eater of broken meats; base, proud, shallow, beggarly, three-suited, hundred-pound, filthy, worsted-stocking knave; a lily-livered, action-taking knave, a whoreson, glass-gazing, super-serviceable finical rogue; one-trunk-inheriting slave; one that wouldst be a bawd, in way of good service, and art nothing but the composition of a knave, beggar, coward, pandar, and the son and heir of a mongrel b*tch: one whom I will beat into clamorous whining, if thou deniest the least syllable of thy addition.

  7. The sniggering little brats wont be there after the next election anyway. Hopefully by then we will still be able to salvage something of our province.

  8. Over 200,000 new public servants since 2003…Even conservatively each public servant costs $50,000 per year with benefits and pension….That means that about over one-half of the deficit relates to the wanton hiring of new public servants….Imagine $10 Billion per year to buy votes…

He also spent over $25 Billion plus the $1 Billion for the 10% rebate for the FAKE Green Energy Act…

I believe that this is criminal…McGuinty should be fired and prosecuted…..
