The governing Liberals’ green energy policies are in the opposition’s crosshairs today following a critical report from Ontario’s auditor general. Watchdog Jim McCarter found that the government fast-tracked billions of dollars of wind and solar energy projects with little oversight, which will drive up electricity bills. Opposition Leader Tim Hudak says the government has created a gold rush in the green energy sector that’s ripping off families.

But the Liberals say they’re creating jobs and pursuing clean-air projects that will reduce health-care costs.

The New Democrats piled on, asking why the Liberals created an energy planning agency when they simply ignore its advice on green projects.

The debate in the legislature reached a boiling point when Hudak told the Liberals they were “giving the finger” to the auditor general.

Premier Dalton McGuinty was at a wind turbine component factory in Windsor, where he delivered an impassioned defence of his green energy policies.

McCarter’s annual report found that the government’s push for green energy would add $220 million a year to the cost of electricity.

He also complained that the government had signed a $7-billion deal with Korean giant Samsung without consulting its key energy agencies or doing any formal economic analysis.

McCarter pointed out that consumers are less protected from rising electricity costs because the Ontario Energy Board has no say over charges that comprise half of a hydro bill.

  1. I WAS IN THE DANISH MERCHANT MARINE YEARS AGO AND I KNOW THE DANES WELL. VESTA ,ONE OF THE WORLDS LARGEST PRODUCERS OF WINDMILLS, JUST FIRED 3000 WORKERS LAST WEEK AND SHUT 6 PLANTS DOWN IN DENMARK. LACK OF ORDERS BECAUSE OF THE HIGH COST OF ELECTRICITY IN DENMARK. THEY CAN SEE THE HANDWRITING ON THE WALL. THE DANES PAY THE HIGHEST ELECTRICITY BILLS IN EUROPE. AVERAGE MONTHLY BILL IS ABOUT 300 TO 400 CANADIAN DOLLARS PER HOUSE.
INDUSTRIES IN DENMARK ARE LOSING THOUSANDS OF JOBS BECAUSE OF THE HIGH COST OF GREEN ENERGY.
NOW THE DANISH GOVERNMENT IS REALLY GOING TO MESS THINGS UP. THEY ARE GOING TO SHUT ALL 20 COAL PLANTS DOWN IN THE COMING YEARS AND BECOME THE ONLY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD TO RELY ON JUST WIND AND SOLAR POWER. LOTS OF LUCK. THE DANISH COAL PLANTS ARE SOME OF THE CLEANEST IN THE WORLD, AS THEY USE THE LATEST GERMAN AIR SCRUBBER TECHNOLOGY. DENMARK DOES NOT ALLOW NUCLEAR PLANTS FOR ENERGY PRODUCTION. THE COUNTRIES THEY WILL BE BUYING POWER FROM ALL DO AND THEY ARE NOT SHUTTING DOWN THEIR COAL PLANTS EITHER.
SO, MAYBE WE SHOULD SEND DALTON AND HIS ENERGY MINISTER TO DENMARK AND THEY CAN SEE FIRST HAND THE WONDERFUL EFFECTS OF GREEN ENERGY ON A COUNTRIES ECONOMY. ALL THE ABOVE INFORMATION COMES FROM THE ENGLISH VERSION OF THE COPENHAGEN POST, THE COUNTRIES LARGEST NEWSPAPER. MANY DANES ARE NOW REALLY WORRIED ABOUT THEIR COUNTRIES DIRECTION WITH THEIR ENERGY POLICY.
THEY DO HOWEVER HAVE A GREAT WELFARE SYSTEM IN DENMARK. U GET LOTS OF UNEMPLOYMENT AND HEALTH BENEFITS FOR ALONG TIME. BUT IF LOTS OF PEOPLE ARE UNEMPLOYED, HOW WILL THEY PAY FOR THE BENEFITS

    • Danish Maritime Magazine, 10-11-2011. You need to Google this article by title.
“Danish employees will be discharged from Vestas in 2012”.
Firings estimated at 2000 with majority from Denmark mainly in administration. Six thousand currently work at Vestas Denmark. Vestas must save DDK 1 billion by the end of 2012.

  2. I believe this has been said…….. McGuinty just says “whatever comes into his pointy little head”. And the NDP piled on ? They piled on the yes vote last week. Incomprehensible with the official data available and the Liberals still defending this Green agenda. Also the media only focusing on the mismanagement of projects rather than the sheer massive inefficient cost and the inexcusable collateral damage to health property and the environment.

    • NDP is part of the problem and not part of the solution to the Ontario “green” energy fiasco.

  3. I agree and have told them so. I hope everyone has written Andrea Horwath and company letters to express contempt.
