The controversial Greenfield South Power gas plant, originally planned for  Mississauga, is being relocated to the Sarnia area.
Ontario’s Minister of Energy Chris Bentley said an agreement was reached, Tuesday, to relocate the 300 megawatt plant to the Ontario Power Generation’s Lambton generating station site.

“We have fulfilled the commitment we made to the residents of Mississauga and Etobicoke,” Bentley told reporters. “We have found a resolution – a good site in a good location – so that the people of Ontario can benefit from the power this facility will provide.”

“It became very clear in the months leading up to September that a gas plant in Mississauga was not the appropriate location. The residents were expressing themselves in a very strong way,” he added. Read article

So the government listens if you live in the big city and complain loud enough that you don’t want something in you backyard!
Why can’t us country folk be treated the same?

Wow does anyone see a pattern here??? We take your garbage to our local dumps to burn and bury, we spread your human waste, we grow your food, now we are to host all your electriciy scams as well. All the while its the urbanites foot print thats the majority of the factor here.

liberals should indeed tread lightly, rural ontarians are fed up and I’d like to see what the cities would do without our help.

  3. ScepticalGord says:

Also, legit rural firearm owners always take the heat whenever crime runs rampant in city centres.
Why hassle the urban gang bangers when you can take the easy feel-good route and harass law-abiding farmers and hunters?

Might as well add the Mega Quarry and mining operations to the list.

Ya, I see the pattern very clearly. The great divide continues to widen.

    better that than wind turbines

      Hey ken,
Obviously, you’ve given this some thought.

So – how many ‘gas plants’ do you think –
      it would take
to rid us of ‘wind turbines’?

      You might want a clue:
I don’t recall the Ontario Power Authority sending out a ‘press release’
      cancelling ‘wind turbine’ contracts.

    Where’s the party?

‘[excerpt] St. Clair Township Mayor and Lambton County Warden Steve Arnold said Bentley called him about the announcement and specifically wanted to know how the community would view it.

“I told the minister the community would view it as a very positive thing for us all,” said Arnold.’

    Sad:
[excerpt] “OPG will not be involved in the environmental approvals, construction or operation of the new plant, nor have any affiliation with Greenfield South. For OPG, this is strictly a commercial real estate transaction.”’

      Privatizing Ontario –

‘[excerpt] St. Clair Township Mayor and Lambton County Warden Steve Arnold said he reached out to Bentley in an effort to lure the plant to his region. He said the two spoke on several occasions leading up to the decision.

“We have a tremendous amount of energy production going on in St. Clair Township,” Arnold said. “And we would like to provide as much power as we can to the province.”

The township already boasts two solar farms and three generating stations, Arnold said. He is excited about the decision.

“It means jobs during the [plant's construction] and it means jobs for the long-term,” Arnold said. “Where we are, we’re very used to working with energy producers. This is a great next step for us.”‘

      Ontario’s ‘energy portfolio’ –
ignores citizens left on the hook -
      for the bill.

‘[excerpt] Under the agreement, Greenfield South Power gets to keep the valuable land just northwest of Sherway plus $85 million for construction materials, labour, engineering work, permits and other costs.
EIG Management LLC, the U.S. hedge fund that financed the project and was suing the Ontario Power Authority over the cancellation, receives $88 million. All lawsuits have now been resolved.
There are also an additional $7 million in site specific costs.
A total of $75.5 million in gas turbines, transformers and condensers as well as $10 million in plant engineering and design work will be re-used at a new gas plant.
Meanwhile, Tory energy critic Vic Fedeli said today (Wednesday, July 11) the actual cost of moving the Mississauga power plant to Lambton County will be nearly $500 million.’

‘[excerpt] “When the Liberals make decisions about power plants in Ontario based on whether they’re going to win or lose seats, people of this province end up paying more money for their electricity.”‘

The central issue here, aside form the money it will cost Ontarians, is that the Premier got to keep his office so directly benefited from this bad deal. This in and of itself can be considered a form of corruption. And two MPPs got to keep their seats. Using the people’s money to directly benefit those in elected office or seeking to be elected is wrong.
