MNR authorizes removal of Bald Eagle nest in Haldimand Wind Development!!!

Authorization for the removal of a Bald Eagle nest under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act (FWCA)

SHAME ON YOU – MNR!!!

From the EBR:
“The [Nextera] Summerhaven Wind Energy Centre is located in Haldimand County and is expected to have a maximum generating capacity of more than 120 megawatts (56 wind turbines).”

“This project has been awarded a Feed-in-Tariff contract by the Ontario Power Authority, received the Renewable Energy Approval from the Ministry of the Environment and an approved Natural Heritage Assessment (NHA) from the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). No Significant Wildlife Habitat (SWH) was identified at this location during the preparation of the NHA.”

“The Commercial Operation Date (COD) is January 19, 2013. The project is now in its construction phase.”

“Since receiving all required approvals for this project, Bald Eagles (listed as special concern in Ontario) have built a nest within the project location in a tree that was scheduled to be removed for the construction of a road, and within 20 metres of the blade sweep of a proposed turbine.

The nest was brought to the attention of MNR in summer 2012 and confirmed in the fall when leaves fell from the tree. Confirmation of an active nest was given by Bird Studies Canada and Guelph District.

Bald Eagles typically start to look for nests in early winter and have been known to use more than one nest. By removing the nest before January 6th it is anticipated they will find another suitable nest location and will avoid disturbing them during their critical nesting period. Timing is critical as the eagles are not currently situated in the nest, however they have been seen perching in the near area. Removing the nest will reduce the risk of eagle mortality at the site. NextEra plans to provide artificial nests in the surrounding areas to ensure that the eagle pair can safely relocate.

MNR has granted authorization under Subsection 7(3) of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act (FWCA) to remove the nest site by January 6th 2013.

  1. Now you are going to tell the birds where to nest .it is there mating season my God have a heart

  2. They care about nothing or no one. Money is their only concern. For a tiny amount of unreliable energy we will destroy our environment, and bring harm to many of the living creatures in it. It is disgusting what greed will do.

  3. Pingback: Our “Ministry of Natural Resources” is now removing Eagles from natural habitats for “Wind Scum”! « The Big Green Lie

  4. This Government and all their agencies like the MNR have all gone completely “rogue”.
The people of Ontario have to take back our Province as fast as possible before it is completely and permanently disfigured!

  5. Bird Studies Canada estimates there were approximately 57 bald eagle nests in Southern Ontario in 2011. http://www.birdscanada.org/download/BAEArpt.pdf Meanwhile close to 900 wind turbines are operating in Ontario with thousands more planned. You would think that a rare bald eagles nest would be protected by law, but apparently this is not the case. Turbines and money are more important than protecting wildlife. What precedent does this set? Does this mean any landowner can now legaly remove a bald eagle nest on their property as long as it is before January 6th? If this is MNR and MOE enforcement we may as well save our tax dollars and disband both ministries because ther are as useless as tits on a boar. I hope somone notifies 6 Nations and Bill Monture, this is exactly the harm to wildlife he was talking about at the ERT. What a farce.

  6. Ya im wanting to see that new artificial
    Nest next terror has!

So r they into fake nature habitates too.
Well i guess so if they think ripping out anything truly natural like real trees and replacing them with thier carbon solving turbines ( riiiiiight )

They sound so liberal now dont they?
Perhaps they can get into the market of fiberglass animals and birds so we can
Just plop them into the landscapes so when
All the real wildlife disappear it will give us
    The illusion they still exsist.

And we pay to have these ministries why??
Sorry I thought to protect our province not to hand it over to foriegn lands.

God i hope derek from next terror isnt responsible for that fake nest, those birds will have to wait at least a yr or so before he can get on that!!

Please voice your disgust to the misery’s ( sorry ministries) On thier tasteless behavior!!
Also write the mpps in the areas this is true crap!!

“We must help students build on the knowledge and leadership they have already shown on climate change issues,” said Wynne during a visit to Earl Haig Secondary School, a Toronto District School Board certified EcoSchool. “Our government is committed to reaching every student with an environmental education that inspires them to take positive action.”

“Climate change is the challenge of our generation,” said Broten. “By informing and inspiring students to take action on environmental issues and climate change, Ontario benefits in two important ways — we will have healthier schools and greener communities, and we are growing the environmental leaders and innovators of tomorrow.”

Building on its commitment to turn environmental education into action on climate change, the McGuinty government is:

Affirming its support for the Ontario EcoSchools program
Launching two new youth websites http://www.obviously.ca for secondary students and http://www.ontario.ca/ezone for elementary students to increase environmental issues awareness.

      • Good point Chevy. In Greek mythology Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave to man. He was condemned by the gods to lashed to a rock along the sea shore for eternity and every day an eagle would come and peck out his liver. Maybe modern progressives who stole the power from the people and gave it to the wind companies will be condemned to by the voters to be lashed to a rock along the north shore of Lake Erie and the eagles can come and peck at them.

  8. Perhaps the nest could be staked out and someone video those MNR workers as they take down the nest. Would make things interesting to have that posted on Youtube.

  9. Yes does someone in the area own or know someone that owns one of those tree cams?
    Thier motion detected and record.

That would be really handy, not like the city folk will notice it on another tree since thier camo.

Is there anyone in the area that could do this??

  10. This is just the kind of news that might finally be picked up (hopefully) by MSM, or go “viral” on social media. It may be worth the $ to hire a professional photographer for maximum effect.

    • Well, a Journalism graduate went out to-day and videoed for ~ 2 h: the tree cutting, the lowering of the nest onto hay bales and the departure of the convoy to parts unknown.

Now the Mid Night Raiders can say that they have accomplished their Mission Statement ” to save endangered species habitat”!

Whether he’ll be able to post to You Tube or not, I’m not sure, but I hope he can and will.

  11. So they had to wait until the leaves fell to determine if it was an eagle’s nest? How dumb can they be?

    • Hey Barbara,
‘[excerpt] “Since receiving all required approvals for this project, Bald Eagles (listed as special concern in Ontario) have built a nest within the project location…..’

NextEra stands firm – it was not there when they –
      carefully – conducted
      their – ‘Environmental Screening’

….and, sadly – the Bald Eagle couple –
      can’t speak up for themselves.

      • Same company that’s involved at Altamont Pass with the eagles.

      • After all we have read and learned about the vulnerability and tenuous hold on extinction of the Bald Eagle….I cannot believe that the Ministry of Natural Resources has sanctioned the cutting down of a nesting tree…just for an Industrial Wind Turbine. I am being not being facetious when I say…watch out for little children, kittens, puppies, bunnies. These people in our government are merciless. They will stop at nothing. Nothing is sacred to them. It is a continuing disgrace which makes me ashamed to say I live in Ontario.

  12. Tell me about it. A letter from my son’s specialist stating that living in close proximity to a wind turbine would be devastating for him because of sensory issues he has., has been completely ignored by those at every level and branch of government. NRWC completely denied having received a registered letter that I had sent in October. When I sent the proof, I received no more response. The papers should be all over this too, but they don’t want to get involved.

  13. I’d like to see the government, for one whole year, only do what the public wants. I think it would be hilarious seeing as how no one can ever make up their minds. Not the mention the public AREN’T (despite what they may think) specialists in all matters.

Let the government do everything the public wants, even the stuff that directly contradicts the stuff they wanted the day before, and see how well everything works at the end of the year. lol

Thinks like more spending on services, but while somehow decreasing taxes. Lowering the price of goods, but somehow only producing those goods here where it’s more expensive to. Etc. etc.

  14. chev – the papers have been bought – they don’t dare ‘get involved’.
NRWC – Niagara Region Wind Corporation – I doubt if the name was any accident. I would guess even before the carpetbaggers came in to look for greedy landowners to sign secret deals with, the NRWC folk had spent many hours with Regional politicians and their staff. Not beyond the bounds of possibility that the actual name was a mutual choice as a way to show Niagara Region’s total commitment to wind and solar energy and a pathetic attempt to give NRWC a credibility they have done nothing to earn nor deserve.
Niagara Regional politicians are desperate to enlarge government and are propagandizing the idea of ‘One Niagara’. Local papers and other media no longer even question this plan and at least one of the dailies runs a weekly section on ‘Regional’ events, implying the debate is all over and ‘One Niagara’ already exists!
Niagara’s biggest contractor is also Niagara’s main wind energy company. The company’s work in Niagara Region is there for all to see. Huge contracts paid for by tax dollars just like the wind energy projects they plan. I would suggest Mr.Rankin is probably the most influential ‘ordinary’ private citizen in Niagara Region. Local papers never, never even say ‘Boo’ to him.
Ontario has devastating and growing problems with wind energy projects and soon to follow, solar array projects. Niagara Region’s are even worse, we have a regional government and their tame local media so totally committed to both wind and solar energy that they no longer care what disasters the results may bring.
I cannot imagine how you must feel, knowing that no one involved could care less about harming your son and can only wish him well.
If anything can describe the complete and utter disrespect and disregard all these people have for the potential harm wind projects will have on both human and wildlife it is the cold and calculating way the MNR and the wind company have reported this most recent assault and added insult to injury by claiming that they will build man made nests to attract these birds and that’s OK.
But of course, as you rightly suggest, there will be not a single ‘green energy activist’ out there who will see this story in their papers, even if they bother to read one, because the local papers will not be reporting it!
The few who do know will shake their heads, pretend sadness, and claim it is a small price to pay for saving the planet with ‘green energy’.
Even more hypocritical in the case of the potential effects on those like your son, you would be labelled a NIMBY and told you had no right to stop IWTs. They would expect you to sell your home and move.
We are left with no one but ourselves………..
    Andrew Watts

    • Does Rankin partner with other companies on construction projects? If so look at these other companies as well.

    • New transmission lines will be running through the Niagara region to the Falls and connect with U.S. lines? Correct?
So any companies involved in these transmission lines should be checked. The major U.S.transmission lines from the falls across New York have ownerships with connections to the fat-cats involved in IWTs.

  15. If you we’re in Vermont we’d just issue a “take” permit so that you could shoot those pesky eagles. Must be the wind company paid for the environmental studies. “Nope..trust me..nothing of significance here..go ahead and build it.” ” Won’t hurt your property values or drive you insane at night when you try to go to sleep either. Oh yeah…and did we mention…it’s the best thing since sliced bread. Just watch how wind power will get you off of nuclear and coal too.”

Keep drinking the wind industry’s Kool Aid Canada..they haven’t quite gotten your last dollar yet..but they are working on it.

    • Perhaps Vermont’s major problem is all the people from Taxachusetts who moved in and now they can vote in Vermont. Plus at least one of your U.S. senators. Check out Harry Reid, senate majority leader, for his role in the U.S. IWT & solar fiascos. Also the U.S. Secretay of the Interior needs to be looked at for issuing permits. The House minority leader is another one.

  16. I am ashamed that Ontario has stooped this low, & has come to this! And the Ministry of Natural Resources has approved it!! Shame!

  17. The thing to understand about the MNR is that its mandate has nothing to do with protection of species or the environment. The job of the MNR, sadly, is to enable the exploitation of our natural resources, pure and simple. Folks imagine them to be stewards of the environment, but anyone who has tried to get an environmentally enlightened opinion from them on gravel pits, wind turbines, power plants, threatened species, you name it, will have learned that what they’re really there to protect is the ‘rights’ of the exploiters.
