Wynne’s green scheme could deal massive blow to Ontario and Canada

web-rob-wynne-0503Gwen Morgan, The Globe and Mail
Last month’s announcement by Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne that her province would link up with the existing Quebec and California carbon dioxide cap-and-trade systems prompted an editorial in this newspaper headlined, “Is this Green Energy Act Round Two?”

Ontario’s Green Energy Act offered so-called “feed-in rates” almost four times existing electricity rates for wind and more than 10 times for solar power. Like bees to honey, wind and solar companies rushed in. By the time the government realized that these subsidies were driving Ontario from one of the lowest to one of the highest power cost jurisdictions in North America, the province had signed myriad 20-year-locked-in-rate-guaranteed contracts that will drive power rates up a further 40 per cent to 50 per cent in coming years. Adding salt to this self-inflicted wound is the reality that much of the green power comes on stream when it isn’t needed. This unneeded electricity is dumped into the United States at bargain-basement prices that Ontario’s Auditor-General found has already cost Ontario power consumers billions of dollars, with much bigger losses yet to come before those 20-year contracts expire. 1. Clearly their enthusiasm continues for these types of projects regardless of how destructive they have been elsewhere or here. Rich benefits are accruing someplace. Just don’t think its Ontario or its citizens. Be nice if we had a government that worked for us…

      • Good reminder of Wynne’s admitting on live television the Breach of Trust, a criminal act, by the Liberal Party regarding the +billion taxpayers dollars being used to cancel/relocate the 2 gas powered electricity generating plants, so that the Liberals Party could get 2 more seats during the previous election! We just printed, read, signed & posted those 3 letters to RMCP, OPP, and Lieut.Governor of Ontario.

    • Oh, it’s enriching some chosen few Liberal only, Ontarions all right. Like Mike Crawley, ex-liberal premier Peterson, Dalton McGuilty, Gerald Butt & muriad other Liberal pols. & insiders.
But the province & it’s non-Liberal supporting normal folk, are getting robbed blind. Because too many fooled folk (fools) & idiots re-elected them to continue the total destruction of a once great (pre-Lib/lefty), now destroyed, Ontario.

      • Philippe Couillard, a neuro-surgeon, just happened to be elected premier of Ouebec.

Wonder what he thinks about the western U.S. outbreak of Valley fever? California, a great place for wind and solar power developments so they can be “green” But at what cost/price?

So let’s do cap-and-trade with them.

  2. A big question!

    Now that Ontario farmers –
are being subsidized [hahahaha] by signing
onto wind turbine leases [to supplement income] —-
    will bankers ditch farmers?

    Ontario farmers should now look
    @ starving Mexican farmers;
shy bankers don’t lend to losers.

    p.s. a rogue government setup!

Note: Lack of capital – is deadly!

  3. The comments section for this Globe article are quite interesting.

One comment has Butts is behind the Liberal party agenda but doesn’t know who the others are.

Another has the idea that big oil interests are NOT involved in promoting cap-and-trade.

None appear to know who the parties are in Quebec that are backing cap-and-trade and the world-wide climate agenda. Or for that matter who the Ontarians are that are involved in both of these agendas.

Who the parties are that are running this whole cap-and-trade/climate agenda in Canada and their connections to their U.S. counterparts is not mentioned.

    • With all of just the known variables, how can anyone say what causes changes in climate is settled. What about any yet unknown variables?

This is an area of investigation only in its scientific infancy.

      • Hey Barbara,
Do you want to retract – what you just said?
Maybe you should give it some thought.

      • Well, I have quite an extensive science education and when you are dealing with many variables this leaves plenty of room for more investigation before declaring a scientific issue settled.

The public can understand one variable, like CO2, but not a whole lot of variables affecting a scientific issue.

Besides if this issue is settled then no more money needs to be spent investigating this issue.

      • I can’t claim to have much formal education in science, unlike yourself Barbara, but I’ve always been pretty good with logic & your post is bang on re the science being anywhere near settled, around the Climate Change issue.
I’m afraid the alarmists, whose careers depend on, well CC alarmism, are crying wolf, which will harm future, possible real needs to take action in any way by a once fooled, now disbelieving public.
We know they lie about IWTs, carbon taxes et al, so nothing alarmists say, can be taken seriously by informed people. It’s a sad situation the world is in, indeed. Science, I don’t believe, is ever settled is it Barbara? There’re are always more/further discoveries.

      • There is plenty of historical information on climate but that was ignored.

It’s the new scientific equipment available that makes this a “new” investigation that is just in its infancy?

Using settled is what should be objected to.

Dr. James Hansen’s growing financial scandal, now over a million dollars of outside income

It seems esteemed NASA astronomer turned climatologist turned paid activist Dr. James Hansen of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) has not been reporting some income that he is required by law to do. How long will NASA continue to look the other way? Chris Horner explains. – Anthony

A Summary of James E. Hansen’s NASA Ethics File

    By Christopher Horner

NASA records released to resolve litigation filed by the American Tradition Institute reveal that Dr. James E. Hansen, an astronomer, received approximately $1.6 million in outside, direct cash income in the past five years for work related to — and, according to his benefactors, often expressly for — his public service as a global warming activist within NASA.

This does not include six-figure income over that period in travel expenses to fly around the world to receive money from outside interests. As specifically detailed below, Hansen failed to report tens of thousands of dollars in global travel provided to him by outside parties — including to London, Paris, Rome, Oslo, Tokyo, the Austrian Alps, Bilbao, California, Australia and elsewhere, often business or first-class and also often paying for his wife as well — to receive honoraria to speak about the topic of his taxpayer-funded employment, or get cash awards for his activism and even for his past testimony and other work for NASA.

Ethics laws require that such payments or gifts be reported on an SF278 public financial disclosure form. As detailed, below, Hansen nonetheless regularly refused to report this income.

Also, he seems to have inappropriately taken between $10,000 and $26,000 for speeches unlawfully promoting him as a NASA employee. This is despite NASA ordering him to return at least some of the money, with the rest apparently unnoticed by NASA. This raises troubling issues about Hansen’s, and NASA’s, compliance with ethics rules, the general prohibition on not privately benefitting from public service, and even the criminal code prohibition on not having one’s public employment income supplemented. All of this lucrative activity followed Hansen ratcheting up his global warming alarmism and activism to be more political which, now to his possible detriment, he has insisted is part of his job. As he cannot receive outside income for doing his job, he has placed himself in peril, assuming the Department of Justice can find a way to be interested in these revelations.

The following summarizes records produced by the Department of Justice to resolve litigation against the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for refusing to comply with a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request regarding the required financial disclosures Dr. James Hansen, director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

These records are his applications for outside employment or other activity (form 17-60), approvals and accompanying documents, and public financial disclosure (form SF 278).

As detailed in the American Tradition Institute’s lawsuit which yielded these records, Hansen suddenly became the recipient of many, often lucrative offers of outside employment and awards after he escalated his political activism — using his NASA position as a platform, and springboard. This began with a strident “60 Minutes” interview in early 2006, alleging political interference by the Bush administration in climate science.

    • Investigated and now retired.

      Meet the creep!

Hansen – the grim paid helper – of helping

‘[excerpt] Why did James Hansen retire on April 2 after 32 years as director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies? As he told the enterprising students of Columbia University’s Sustainability Media Lab who captured him in the following video, “I want to devote full time to trying to help the public understand the urgency of addressing climate change.”

      Hansen’s legacy!
      ….so sad

      • He served the interests of some important Washington people or these activities would not have taken place.

    • Glad to see your referencing wattsupwiththat.

Climate science is said to be in its “infancy”.
Computer models used by the IPCC are being proven wrong. More than 107 alarmist predictions have not happened.

The discussions on wattsupwiththat are well worth following on a daily basis. We have so much to learn about the history of the ever changing climatic conditions and how ridiculous it is to think human activity is the main driver of the changes.

      • No need to travel to Rome but it is interesting to look at that situation. Just look at what is going on at the CIGI in Waterloo.

An internet search using CIGI + UNEP yields plenty of information on the new “green” economy , sustainability and other things going on at CIGI in Waterloo.

Who would think a small Ontario town would be engaged in this much activity? Good place to hide what’s taking place?

It’s no wonder that Ontario is saturated in the UN agenda.

      • Queens Park joins forces with the United Nations

Ontario Liberals – just took the next step towards –
        their Agenda 21 legislation.
Bill 73 – proposed Smart Growth for Our Communities Act

The liberals have a majority government – which means
        they can do anything they want;
nothing so far – has been – in the best interest of Ontario citizens.

So if Ontario has had no legislation – as in – law
        why are Ontario municipalities implementing
Agenda 21 aka Kyoto Protocol aka Sustainable Development
        aka Smart Growth?

        To make matters worse;
        then – hiding By-Laws.
By-Laws passed by council – form a law
and all By-Laws should be posted – for easy access
so the ordinary citizen can see what council is doing.

Citizens have busy lives and cannot attend
        every council meeting.

        Most important –
        council transferred their power
        to the Mayor and CAO
and council members sit on Agenda 21 committee’s
and hold portfolio’s in most cases.

The pretend council – with no power to represent the community
have become useful idiots – of convenience
        but still pass By-Laws
        that are then – hidden.

        A liberal horror show – in plain sight;
        with the appearance of corruption.

      • The CIGI Waterloo complex cost was $69 million.

Got $30 million in 2003 with additional $50 million later according to internet information.

This was a whole lot of money spent in a small Ontario town unless this was going to be an important centre of activity.

Then there were the initial donations to get this started and the City donated the land for the centre with a 99 year lease.

Lot’s of money spent at Waterloo.

Ontario is also a member of The Climate Group’s States and Regions Alliance Steering Group, mandated to accelerate international action on climate change by raising the profile of successful mitigation efforts, facilitating discussions among states and regions and sharing best practices from around the world.

The alliance represents 313 million people,‎ 11 percent of the world economy and seven percent of global emissions. Other members of the alliance include Quebec, Manitoba, British Columbia, and other states and regions around the world.

The compact builds on Ontario’s recent actions showing leadership and collaboration on climate change, including:

Working with all provinces to ensure the Canadian Energy Strategy, currently being developed, takes climate change objectives into account.
A Joint Statement on Climate Change with California, Quebec and British Columbia. The statement recognizes the urgency of addressing climate change and resolves to work collaboratively towards mid-term greenhouse gas reduction goals.
Meeting Ontario’s 2014 greenhouse gas reduction target of six per cent below 1990 levels.

Leading and collaborating with other jurisdictions and industry leaders to address climate change is part of the government’s economic plan for Ontario. The four part plan is building Ontario up by investing in people’s talents and skills, building new public infrastructure like roads and transit, creating a dynamic, supportive environment where business thrives and building a secure savings plan so everyone can afford to retire.

Wynne says feds standing on sidelines as Ontario joins cap-and-trade market
‘[excerpt] Three quarters of Canada’s 35 million citizens will soon live in jurisdictions with a price on carbon after Ontario announced Monday it is joining Quebec and California in a cap-and-trade system the federal government lampoons as a “job-killing carbon tax.”

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and Quebec’s Philippe Couillard signed off on the carbon trading market in Quebec City after Wynne had earlier announced the initiative in Toronto. They join B.C. and Alberta as carbon-pricing provinces.

“Call it carbon pricing, cap and trade, a market mechanism or — I believe it’s misleading — but if you must, go ahead and call it a tax,” Wynne said in Toronto.’

April 17: It’s a spring time economic romance in Washington. Plus, beer, circuses, air conditioning – and an app to help you relax

‘[excerpt] Hydro One, and the Big Beer Reform.

      If you live in Ontario,
yesterday had a few announcements that could be key for your daily life:
the Ontario government will sell off 60 per cent of the province’s utility company,
and beer will be sold in grocery stores.

Since air conditioning and beer prices are the cornerstones of any Ontario summer, both will draw plenty of attention.

The privatization of Hydro One will begin with a sale of 15 per cent of the company, but would eventually extend to 60 per cent – which could raise as much as $9 billion – with the funds intended to pay off debt and transit investment.

But the beer reforms made perhaps even bigger headlines (such is the sexy allure of beer over electricity), with claims that the Beer Store would be taken to task: with new liquor licenses for smaller packs to be given to grocery stores, as well as cheaper prices for restaurants and bars, a beer ombudsman, and a “beer tax” intended to raise $100 million.

The Beer Store will also be ordered to update its utilitarian (ahem, hideous) décor. The move was welcomed by the province’s craft breweries, who have often said they’re being strangled by the monopoly.

The Beer Store itself is highly unusual – a privately owned consortium of foreign-owned beer companies, with exclusive rights to sell 12 and 24 packs of beer in the province. (The Globe has a good run down of why the Beer Store is so loathed here.)

Unfortunately for those who want to pick up a couple of cans at their grocery store this summer, you’re in for a disappointment. You won’t get grocery beer until two years from now – and then stores will be limited to selling six-packs.

Not such a dazzling jump after all, and, perhaps, an alcoholic smokescreen for the privatization of Hydro One.’
