Full house for wind turbine PEC Town Hall meeting

People who do not want to see wind turbines line the south shore of Prince Edward County made up the vast majority of the packed house attending MPP Todd Smith’s Town Hall meeting Thursday night at St. Andrew’s Church in Picton.   1. Anyone who says that Wolfe Islanders are happy with the turbines is wither willfully ignorant of the situation, or transparently self-interested. All the B&Bs in view are closed or for sale, with no buyers. Houses within 1 km of the development have been on the market for years and no movement. Lawsuits are in the works, as generational residents discover their land — their only investment — is now worthless, due to the restrictions of the GEA. MPAC has been reducing property-taxes on effected properties and covering it up with non-disclosure agreements. Wolfe Island has one of the highest bird and bat mortality rates of any facility in North America. And it has never produced the promised “increased efficieny” Ian Baines touted and the justification for such environmental destruction. Wolfe Island is no more efficient than the rest (24%). And now, Ian Baines and John Gerretsen are setting up another “experiment” on the only tourism site on Wolfe Island that has experienced any real growth — Big Sandy Bay Conservation Area. It will only be a few more precious summers before the blasting, dregding, cabling, swooshing and flickering lights begin on one the last, ancient limestone shoals and rich fishing beds of Lake Ontario.

    Shame. Shame. Shame on anyone who values his wallet more than his neighbours, his community and his own integrity

    • Do you have Wolfe Island land plots showing the dimensions of all the properties? How high are the turbines? A safe distance from the turbines is ~ 3 1/2 times the height from neighbouring properties. Land width needed for the 100 meter turbines is ~ 800 meters wide or 400 meters on each side of the turbine from neighbouring properties as a safety factor setbacks. Check to determine if all the turbines meet this basic requirement. Otherwise the turbines are infringing on neighbours land. Same distance applies to setbacks from road right-of-ways.
      “Noise”/health issues are separate issues from the safety factors and are very much greater in distance.
      Many of these wind turbines are being installed on land too narrow for safety reasons alone.

      • A circle with a 400 meter radius has an 800 meter diameter with the turbine being the centre point. Higher turbines would require greater diameters. Or 1,300 ft radius and 2,600 ft diameter with the higher turbines needing greater diameters.

      • Ontario land lots were not all laid out the same depending on date and location of the divisions.Common division was 200 acre rectangular lots with narrow side on the road.Since that time many lots have been divided into 100 acre lots. The common road allowance was 66 ft.Common concession depth was 6,600 ft or 1 1/4 miles wide.
        In the US land was most often laid out in 640 acre sections or 1 sq. mile.Many farms were 1/4 section or 160 acres. So square lots in the US and rectangular lots in Ontario. This makes a difference when discussing wind turbine placement issues between the two countries.

      • But the safe distance in feet or meters from IWTs remains the same.

      • Each plot of land that has an IWT or will have an IWT has to be looked at to determine if there are or will be neighbouring property infringment issues. Not difficult to do if local land plot maps are used which give property dimensions. Same is true for IWT safety issues. Keep in mind that these issues are not the same as IWT “noise”/health issues which are different.
        IWT turbines heights come into play as well.
