WAINFLEET – Speaking with a united voice. That’s the goal of a conference on wind turbines next week in Wainfleet. “We’re bringing in elected officials and are going to brainstorm … we’ll go away with ideas on how to speak with a united voice against wind turbines,” said Ald. Betty Konc said. Wainfleet joined about 90 other municipalities last year when it passed a moratorium on industrial wind turbines being built in the township. The moratorium doesn’t hold any weight as the province’s Green Energy Act takes away any local decision making on wind turbine projects.
The township also passed a bylaw calling for a two-kilometre setback for the wind turbines from any nearby residences. That bylaw is being challenged in court by Wainfleet Wind Energy. Wainfleet Wind Energy is one of two companies looking to set up wind turbine farms in Wainfleet. The other private company is Niagara Region Wind Corp. Konc said there will be three guest speakers at the Friday, Feb. 22, conference, which runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Jericho House on Rathfon Rd. Read article
